In May at Gallery "Na Shabolovke" opens the exhibition «Kids’ Vkhutemas». The exhibition project is dedicated to the centenary of the foundation of Vkhutemas, one of the first artistic schools of the avant-garde era.
The exhibition tells the history of the Higher Art and Technical Studios from an unexpected angle. What did the builders of revolutionary art and constructors of the future world prepare for children? The avant-garde era had high hopes for the growing generation – the main observers, participants, consumers of the new culture – and sought to create a new presentive environment for their formation. For the first time the exhibition shows the Soviet design of the 1920s for children: ceramics, textiles, books, puppetry, and architectural projects.
G. Rublev "Ball play". The end of the 1920s. Private collection.
The gallery’s space accommodates an open workshop – an interactive laboratory, which allows everyone to try on the role of a Vkhutemas student: to perform unusual tasks on such topics as color, graphics, rhythm, volumetric and spatial compositions. It was the «zero course» of the studios, called propaedeutic, that became the platform for training future architects, designers, artists in the 1920s and allowed the institute to compete with the Bauhaus – the avant-garde school in Germany, whose anniversary was celebrated around the world last year.
The exhibition will be complemented by an extensive educational program for children and adults. Among the planned events are lectures, seminars and master classes. «Kids’ Vkhutemas» is to become the key event of the 4th city festival «Avant-garde Days».
